Madeira:
In late August, 2026, I plan on taking a small group to Madeira with five unforgettable days immersed in the island’s birds, landscapes, and culture. We will spend the first couple of days exploring popular areas in Funchal, hopefully a pelagic to target specific seabirds to the region, as well as local cuisine. Then, we will spend the second half of the trip exploring Madeira’s heart, winding through the misty Fanal Forest and along the island’s dramatic north coast, stopping in Porto Moniz, Seixal, and Santana for both scenery and species, as well as a sunrise at Pico do Areeiro, where sweeping mountain views meet high-elevation birds like Berthelot’s Pipit. We’ll conclude with a relaxed final morning, or a second attempt at a perfect sunrise before departing.

Mainland:
This trip will be the perfect combination and mix of birds, cuisine, scenery, exploration, and wines of Portugal. Although birding will be a high priority, this is more of a casual trip during the early stages of fall migration. We will focus on both Iberian specialties as well as migrants, but also explore the beautiful cities and countryside of Portugal. I look forward to providing this opportunity to birders wanting a more relaxed trip, or nonbirders that would love to explore a new country while learning some birds as well!
